Taxable Income Settlement

We received a settlement…Do we add it to our income for taxes?

We lived next to a contaminated site and everyone in the neighborhood received a settlement. Do we add this to our taxable income?

Yes. It is “Other Income”. You will most likely recieve a form 1099-MISC from the party that paid the settlement stating how much you recieved.

Since they can turn that in as a business expense on their taxes, they’ll almost certainly report your share to the IRS too.

Examining solicitors’ bills for LMSD
Although only 11 months have gone by in the current Lower Merion School District budget year, taxpayers will likely end up spending about $650,000 between July 1, 2009, and June 30, 2010, in legal services for the work done by its solicitor.
